A face is personal data

Under the GDPR a recognisable face is personal data — and so are license plates, signatures, ID numbers and anything else that singles out one individual. Publishing them without a lawful basis is a compliance question, not a matter of taste.

It applies whether you are a shop posting product photos taken on a busy street, a journalist publishing a leaked document, or someone sharing a group photo with a stranger's child in the background.

02 / Coverage

Cover more than feels necessary

The usual mistake is a censor that is too small and too gentle. A light blur over a few characters can still be read, and a tight selection around a face often leaves the ear, the hairline and the jaw — enough for recognition. Push the intensity up and let the selection spill past the edges.

Use Before / after before you download. Toggling between the two states is the fastest way to spot the corner you missed.

Vector graphics are a trap

Blurring text in a PDF or a design file that is later exported can leave the original characters sitting underneath the effect. Working on a flat raster image — JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP, which is all this tool accepts — means the pixels themselves are rewritten. There is no layer to peel back.

How do I censor a photo online for free?
Upload your image to the editor above — or press Ctrl + V to paste a screenshot. Choose blur, pixelate or solid bar, set the intensity, then click and drag across the area you want to hide. Click Download to save it.
Are my photos kept after I use the tool?
No. Any temporary copy created while you work is deleted within 24 hours. It is never shared with anyone and never used for anything other than the edit you asked for. Location and camera metadata are stripped from the file you download.
What is the difference between blur, pixelate and solid bar?
Blur softens the area while keeping a natural look — best for faces. Pixelate replaces it with mosaic blocks — best for text, plates and documents. Solid bar covers it with a flat opaque rectangle, so nothing of the original remains.
Can I undo a censor I applied by mistake?
Yes, as many times as you need. Use Undo and Redo in the toolbar, or Ctrl + Z and Ctrl + Shift + Z. Clear all wipes every edit and returns the original. Until you download, nothing is final.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Upload from your iPhone or Android gallery, draw the areas with your finger or a stylus, pinch with two fingers to zoom, and download the result to your device.
Which file formats can I use?
